There are a lot of great villas for rent in Dubai, but that doesn’t mean they will feel like home as soon as you step foot inside the door. Creating a comfortable, stylish atmosphere is up to you!
Unfortunately, decorating a rental isn’t so easy, especially if you prefer a space with a little color. Rentals are usually painted and carpeted in neutral colors, and because you don’t own the property, there isn’t much you can do it about. Most places won’t allow you to change the paint color, and spending money to replace the carpet in a space you don’t own is a waste of money.
That doesn’t mean you’re doomed to live in a sad, whitewashed space! Here are a few ways to inject color into a rented villa.
Get Creative with Wall Treatments
Paint isn’t your only option if you want your walls to look more colorful. You just have to get creative about what you hang on the wall.
A few ideas include:
- Create a gallery wall out of pictures and paintings
- Hang a tapestry or a rug on the wall
- Decorate with removable wallpaper
These are great tips for the living room and bedroom, but there are also things you can do in the kitchen and bathroom. Tile tattoos can dress up existing tiles, while colorful tile stickers can create the look of tiles when they weren’t any there before. Plus, they can easily be removed when it’s time to move.
Use Colorful Textiles
Textiles are a great way to add a little color to nearly every room in your home. They include throw blankets, bedding, and decorative pillows. Place colorful pillows on the couch, drape colorful throw blankets in the living room, and choose a colorful comforter for the bed.
Curtains are a great way to add color to a space too. Hang colorful curtains in front of the windows, but hang them higher on the wall and let them drape on the floor for a more impactful look. Curtains can also be hung on the wall behind a couch or a bed for a dramatic, colorful look.
Lay a Colorful Rug
Rental carpets usually come in boring colors, like off white, brown, and gray. If you’re looking for something with a bit more personality, decorate the floor with rugs instead!
Use a colorful rug to define an area in the dining room, or use one with colors that tie all the hues in an open space together. Use round rugs, rectangular rugs, hall rugs, and more. Not only will they dress up your space, they will also keep the carpet clean, which means you’re more likely to get your deposit back!
Colorful rugs don’t necessarily have to be expensive either. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on a brand-new rug, look for second hand rugs. They have just as big of an impact, but they can make your space look great for less.
Make Bookcases More Interesting
Bookcases can take up a lot of wall space. Take advantage of that space by adding wallpaper to your bookcases.
The back panel of most bookcases can easily be removed. If not, smaller squares of paper can be applied directly to the back. That way, playful pops of color and interesting patterns peek out over the tops of your books, inviting people to come in for a closer look.
Just because you can’t paint the walls doesn’t mean you can’t paint your furniture! Bookcases are especially easy to paint, since there’s no upholstery that needs to be avoided.
Choose Statement Furniture Pieces
Statement furniture is a great way to imbue a space with your personality. Just make sure you know how to make statement furniture pieces work.
If you don’t feel confident about strange furniture styles and big, bulky items, focus on furniture pieces that feature bright colors or funky patterns. An accent chair in hot pink or a footstool that is upholstered in gold fabric is sure to get attention.
If you don’t have a lot of money to spend, consider refinishing your furniture pieces. An end table or coffee table can quickly and easily be painted a bold color.
Don’t think just because you’re renting a villa in Dubai that you’re stuck with boring shades of tan, white, and gray. With the tips on this list, you can inject color into your space, but more importantly, you can do it without altering the space permanently.
