Tips for decorating a self-build home

One of the things people love about buying an existing property is that older homes tend to have character. Whereas new build properties are considered to be more generic.  We, on the other hand, believe that if you decorate the new build home just right, it will feel homely and full of character, your character!

Where other people see a generic, new-build home, we see a blank canvas which you can turn into anything you want.

Design work during the build stage

If you’re having a property built then you may have a choice on size, structure and materials used to build the property.  This can help you to define the design of the property from the outside.  As well as this, you will also have a choice of fixtures and fittings to finish the interior of your self-build. These will have a massive impact on the overall design of the home and may limit your interior design options. For this reason, you should think about how you want to decorate your self-build home and keep this in mind when making your selections.

Set the tone while decorating a self-build home

Think about what you would like your colour scheme to be.  Would you like colours that create a bright and airy home, or a warm and cosy one? When you consider a colour, think about what feeling that colour evokes in you.

For wall options, adding a feature wall is a great way to add character. Another great wall option is panelling. Adding panels to your blank walls is a fantastic way to add both colour and texture.

Think about the lighting

Homes need to be well-lit for safety reasons and to maximise your enjoyment of the house.  But lighting Is also crucial for setting the mood and tone in a room.  For this reason, you should think about where and how many lights you are going to have installed in the ceilings/walls, as well as additional lamps.

Dress your windows

There are lots of different ways to dress your windows, from curtains, to blinds to shutters.  Although they all serve the same purpose, they all inject a different feel into a room and bring something different to the interior design.

Select matching furniture when decorating a self-build home

You’ll need furniture for your new home, so make sure you buy furniture that matches your design concept but also works well in the space.  The furniture you buy can make a space look and feel bigger, or smaller, more modern, or more homely. Equally the furniture can finish a design concept, or completely clash with it.

Traditional homes finishes

You can also install some more traditional home fittings into your room to give it a little more character.  Things like curtail rails and coving are a simple addition, but they can make all the difference to the overall feel of the room.

Mirrors while decorating a self-build home

Mirrors are a fantastic addition to any home, they have a massive practical use, but more than that, they really finish the design of a home.  Mirrors make your house look bigger and brighter as they reflect light around the room.  What’s more, mirrors are beautiful and can become a big feature in the room.  For new-build properties, mirrors add character.

Shelving

A simple set of shelves can make a new-build more homely, especially when you use it to store your personal ornaments and keepsakes.  This is another simple way to inject some character and personality into the home.  Shelving comes in so many different colours and finishes that you are sure to find something perfect for your home.

Rugs

You will probably have already thought about your flooring, whether you want carpet or wood floors etc.  but have you thought about adding rugs? Rugs are one of the easiest ways to add character and personality into a room. They add colour, and they can really bring together an interior design.

As we’ve said, when you self-build your own home, you are starting with a blank canvas and you can create literally any design you like.  Start with deciding the kind of design you are trying to achieve, the overall look of the home.  Then decide on the big things, like the materials you are going to use and the fixtures and fittings.  After that, work your way through the above list.  Before you know it, your home will be fully designed and looking stunning.
